Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the device?

Using the AMPvivo J40-R depends on whether your battery has some residual voltage or is completely dead (stone dead at 0V). Follow the correct procedure below:

Standard Start (Normal Mode)

  1. Connect to the device: Plug the jumper cables into the device, ensuring the black cable is in the negative slot and the red cable is in the positive slot.
  2. Connect to the truck: Attach the red clamp to the positive battery terminal (or positive jump point), and the black clamp to the negative battery terminal (or negative jump point/ground).
  3. Power on: Turn on the device. Once it reads "Ready", you are good to start the truck.

Zero-Volt Start (Force Start Mode)

If the battery voltage is too low for the device to automatically recognize, use Force Start:

  1. Connect to the device: Plug the cables into the device first (black to negative, red to positive).
  2. Connect positive first: Attach the red clamp to the positive side of the battery or the positive jump point.
  3. Engage Force Start: Press and hold the Force Start button until the device begins beeping.
  4. Connect negative: Attach the negative clamp to the battery, engine ground, or negative jump terminal.
  5. Wait and start: Leave it connected while it beeps for about 10 to 15 seconds before cranking the truck to life.
  6. Disengage and remove: After the truck starts, make sure to press the Force Start button again or turn the device off to stop the beeping. Once stopped, you can safely remove the jumper cables.
Will this actually start a semi truck?

The AMPvivo J40-R has been rigorously field-tested on completely dead, multi-battery Class 8 commercial truck banks in real-world conditions.

  • Proven Engine Compatibility: It has successfully cranked and started heavy-duty powerplants, including:PACCAR MX-13 enginesVolvo D13 (and DD15 platforms) in models like the Volvo VNLFreightliner LT series enginesKenworth trucks equipped with Cummins X15 engines
  • Cold-Weather Performance: It is built to perform in harsh winter environments, though operation depends on the overall health of the truck's battery bank.
  • The Battery Health Factor: While the jump starter delivers massive cranking power, it relies on the truck's existing batteries being in decent health (i.e., not physically internally shorted or destroyed). Once the battery bank is in fair structural condition and has some baseline integrity, the J40-R will successfully bring the truck to life—even in freezing temperatures.
How is the lithium battery better than traditional lead acid?

Traditional heavy-duty commercial jump boxes—the big rolling units packed with two heavy Group 31 lead-acid batteries—have been a shop staple for years, but a high-output portable lithium-ion unit like the J40-R offers massive practical advantages for truckers and fleets:

  • Weight and Portability (Under 20 lbs vs. 50–90+ lbs): Traditional dual Group 31 rolling jump packs are exceptionally heavy, making them a hassle to lug across a snowy yard, lift into a side box, or maneuver around a tight rig. The J40-R packs massive cranking power into a compact unit you can easily carry with one hand.
  • Massive Power-to-Size Ratio: It delivers high-output starting current without needing two full-sized commercial battery cases to do the job, freeing up critical space in your cab or side boxes.
  • Minimal Self-Discharge: Lead-acid batteries lose their charge rapidly when sitting idle—especially in freezing weather—and require constant trickle-charging to stay healthy. Lithium-ion packs maintain their charge much longer in storage, ensuring the unit is ready to go when an emergency strikes months down the road.
  • Zero Maintenance: Unlike conventional lead-acid packs that suffer from sulfation if left uncharged or require fluid and terminal upkeep, lithium cells require virtually zero maintenance outside of recharging after use.
What is the return period?

Returns: We offer a 1-month return period from the initial purchase date. To be eligible for a full refund, items must be in their original, unused, and unopened condition.

Warranty: Each unit is backed by a 1-year manufacturer warranty covering any defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. (Standard warranty terms apply; proof of purchase required).

Can I keep this in the cab of my truck?

Absolutely! Unlike heavy, bulky traditional gear, this unit is built specifically to live right inside your cab without being an eyesore:

  • Compact, Lunchbox Design: It is nice and small, neatly packaged in its own custom carrying case with a strap so it looks clean tucked away in the corner rather than cluttering up your workspace.
  • Zero Harmful Off-Gassing: Unlike traditional lead-acid batteries that can vent dangerous gases, lithium-ion units do not off-gas, making them safe to store inside enclosed cab spaces.
  • Advanced Mechanical Safety: It uses an internal relay that physically separates the electrical contacts to actively prevent short-circuiting, giving you total peace of mind while storing it right alongside your gear.
Can I use this for my car as well?

You can safely use it on a standard car, SUV, or light truck without any risk of overpowering it.

Electrical systems only draw as much current as they actually need. Even though this unit packs massive heavy-duty cranking power built for commercial semi-trucks, your car's electrical system will simply take what it requires to start, making it completely safe for regular passenger vehicles.

Can it work on a completely dead battery (0 V)?

Yes, with Force Start mode. Force Start pushes current into a zero-volt battery bank, the state where most jump packs refuse to engage.

Please note that Force Start is for emergency use only, and standard safety protections are disabled during Force Start mode. For complete step-by-step instructions on how to properly engage Force Start, please see the How do I use the device? section above.

Will I get electrocuted?

No, as long as you follow standard operating procedures and use the device correctly.

  • Built-In Protections: During normal use, the unit features advanced safety protections, including reverse polarity protection and spark resistance to ensure safe handling.
  • Safe Handling: Because it operates on a DC 12V system designed to jump-start heavy-duty vehicles, you won't get shocked under normal operation. However, always ensure your hands are dry, never touch the metal clamps together while powered on, and avoid using a damaged unit or operating it outside its recommended temperature ranges.
  • Force Start Safety Note: As mentioned in the zero-volt procedure, standard safety protections are temporarily bypassed during Force Start mode for emergency use only. Always follow the step-by-step instructions carefully when engaging Force Start.
How often do I need to recharge it?
  • Storage / Unused: If the device is kept in storage and not actively used, a good rule of thumb is to recharge it every 12 months, though in reality, its low self-discharge rate means it will easily last up to 24 months on a single charge.
  • After Use: If you use the device to jump-start a truck, it is good practice to top it back up to 100% as soon as you can. However, it is usually not strictly necessary immediately after a single jump, as the massive 64,000 mAh capacity is sized to provide multiple jump-starts on a single charge cycle.
  • Low Battery Warning: Do not let the battery run too low. Avoid attempting a jump-start when the charge drops under 25%. Always recharge it when you get the chance to keep it ready for the next emergency.
Why not just buy the one from Harbor Freight?

While rolling jump starters from places like Harbor Freight might seem like a budget-friendly option, they come with major drawbacks for commercial drivers:

  • Heavy Lead-Acid Technology: Those units rely on traditional, bulky lead-acid batteries. They are exceptionally heavy, difficult to lug around a rig or lift into a side box, and suffer from rapid self-discharge when sitting idle in cold weather.
  • Not Built for the Cab: Because they use lead-acid chemistry, they can vent harmful gases and aren't designed to safely or comfortably live inside the enclosed space of your cab.
  • For just a price difference of $19 more (plus shipping), you get the AMPvivo J40-R, a compact, lightweight lithium-ion powerhouse equipped with Force Start, designed specifically to live right inside your cab in its own custom strap case, and built to effortlessly crank multi-battery Class 8 trucks.
Can this work on agricultural equipment?

Yes, absolutely. You can safely use the AMPvivo J40-R on tractors, combines, and other agricultural equipment, provided it meets the following requirements:

  • 12V System: The equipment must operate on a standard 12-volt electrical system (it is not compatible with 24V setups).
  • Engine Size: The engine displacement must be under 16 liters (<16L).
  • Battery Health: The equipment's existing batteries must be in fair, jumpable condition (i.e., not physically internally shorted or destroyed).
